How Did You Start Collecting Phonograph Records?

When you start thinking about how you started collecting them, you automatically think about when? Can you remember?

Well for so many people the start was back in the day of the phonograph record and that being the main vessel with which you could get the music you wanted to hear. For others it could have been as simple as hearing someone talk about phonograph records, records or as the terminology has changed in many cases to just simply vinyl.

You may have heard about phonograph records by listening to your favorite Disc Jockey on a radio station. If you were listening you without a doubt heard about a recent 45 or about a new album release that they were going to play. As a matter of fact when you listen to radio stations even today you hear reference to album or even 45’s, you hear entertainers on award shows or talk shows talking about releasing a new album. Those were things that could have sparked your interest if you were not already involved in building your assortment of your favorite songs on vinyl.

Dylan RecordsNow I realize that there are a myriad of ways one could have ventured into what I have loved for a hobby for many years. It could have been as simple as someone offered you some of their records because they were cleaning out their garage and didn’t want them anymore. Even though you had no clue what  you were embarking on you said, “oh I would love them”. Now the truth be known you may not have even ever had a phonograph or the records to play on it, but it was free and you thought you helping out a friend. You could have been someone who grew up in a family where there was a record player and an assortment of records, even though your best memories of them were having to be reminded  to not touch those or handle them this way, don’t scratch them, and you silently swore to yourself that you wanted nothing to do with those miserable things when you grew up, but those memories are there and as time went on there is a good chance that you picked up phonograph and a few records that you remembered.

Ok, the truth is that how and when are just thoughts of another time, some good, some great and some, well not so much. But it was the beginning of why you are reading this today and why you have a phonograph and one record or thousands.

We all started somewhere, for some reason and that love of vinyl has grown. Let us know below how you started your collection and what it has grown to!
